Cumin seed is called as 'Jeera' in India which is an oblong shaped, sharp flavored and dark colored aromatic spice which is considered next to pepper in the context of importance and applications. It is the dried fruit of an annual, thin-stemmed cumin plant, which belongs to parsley family. Cumin is well known for its high end characteristics for curing and its usage in several herbal and Ayurvedic medicines.

In India, the Cumin plant is produced as a Rabi crop i.e. it is sown in the winters (in the months of October to December) and is harvested in the months of February, March and April.
